The short answer

What does a website care plan include?

A website care plan is a monthly fee for keeping a website secure, backed up, online and up to date. A good one covers hosting, the SSL certificate, software and security updates, backups and a set amount of content changes. UK care plans typically cost £30 to £150 a month. Ours include the website itself, from £49 a month with no contract.

What website maintenance actually involves

Website care plans exist because websites don't stay finished. The software they run on gets security updates. SSL certificates and domain names need renewing. Forms stop sending when an email address changes. Prices, opening hours and staff change, and the website has to keep up.

On a WordPress site there's more: the core software, the theme and every plugin need regular updates, and one out-of-date plugin can be enough to let someone in. Most small business owners don't think about any of this until something breaks, which is usually the worst possible moment.

A care plan, sometimes sold as a website maintenance package, hands all of that to someone whose job it is. You pay a monthly fee and get on with running the business.

What our care plans include

Every plan includes all of this, alongside the website itself. The differences between plans are in the number of pages and changes.

  • Hosting and SSL

Fast hosting and the certificate that puts the padlock in the address bar, renewed for you so it never lapses.

  • Security updates

Updates are applied for you, so the site isn't left running old software that someone else has found a way into.

  • Backups

Copies of your site are kept, so a mistake or a bad day never means starting again.

  • Content changes

Send new prices, photos or text by email or WhatsApp. Starter includes 1 change a month, Growth and Pro unlimited small edits, and Pro edits are done within 48 hours.

  • Forms that reach you

Your contact form sends enquiries to the address you choose. Change your email and I'll update the form too.

  • A person, not a ticket queue

You email Charlie, the person who built your site. I reply within one working day.

Hosting only, an agency care plan or ours

Three common ways small businesses keep a website running, and what each one leaves to you.

Hosting and agency figures are typical UK ranges for a small site, not quotes. What's included varies a lot, so compare the details.

What happens when nobody looks after a website

Usually nothing dramatic, at first. Then the SSL certificate lapses and browsers start warning visitors the site is 'not secure'. Or the domain renewal goes to an old email address, and the website and your email both disappear on the same morning.

The quieter failures cost more. A contact form that stopped sending months ago. Opening hours from two Christmases back. An old plugin that lets spam pages appear on your site. None of these announce themselves, which is why a care plan is mostly about someone checking before you or your customers notice.

Taking over a website someone else built

If your current designer has retired, gone quiet or doubled their prices, this is how the handover works.

  1. Step 1: Send me the web address

That's all I need to start. I'll look at what it's built on, how out of date it is and who controls the domain and hosting.

  2. Step 2: Get an honest recommendation

Some sites are worth looking after as they are. Others cost more to patch than to rebuild on a plan. I'll tell you which, and what either would cost, before you agree to anything.

  3. Step 3: Gather the logins

The domain registrar, the hosting and any accounts in the old designer's name. I'll help you get them transferred to you.

  4. Step 4: Move over without a gap

The old site stays live until the new setup is ready, so customers never find a blank page.

The kind of site a care plan keeps current

What to notice

  1. Look for the details that date fastest: events, opening times, contact names
  2. On a care plan, those updates are an email away rather than a login you've forgotten
  3. Press “Try this with my details” to see it with your organisation's name

Questions people ask

What does website maintenance include?

At minimum: hosting, keeping the SSL certificate current, software and security updates, and regular backups. Better plans add content changes, checks that forms still work and a person to contact when something looks wrong. Ask any provider exactly what's included, how often backups run and how quickly changes get done.

How much does website maintenance cost in the UK?

Hosting on its own typically costs £5 to £20 a month. A care plan from an agency or freelancer is typically £30 to £150 a month, depending on how many changes and how much support are included. Our plans are £49 to £99 a month and include the website itself.

Do I really need a website care plan?

Someone needs to do the work, and it doesn't have to be a paid plan. If you're comfortable updating software, renewing certificates and checking backups yourself, you can manage without one. Most owners would rather not, and a neglected site tends to fail quietly: forms stop sending, certificates lapse and details go stale.

Can you look after my WordPress website?

Often, yes. Send me the address and I'll check it for free: what it runs on, how far behind on updates it is and who controls the domain and hosting. Then I'll tell you honestly whether it's better looked after as it is or rebuilt on a plan, and what each would cost.

What counts as a content change?

Things like new prices, opening hours, photos, a new service or a paragraph of text. Starter includes 1 change a month, and Growth and Pro include unlimited small edits. If you ask for something bigger, such as a whole new page, I'll tell you before I start if it's outside your plan.

Is there a minimum term on your care plans?

No. Plans are month to month. Cancel any time and you won't be charged again. Your plan stops at the end of the month you cancel in, and you keep your domain name, your text and your photos.
