Cheap websites
The hidden costs of cheap web design, and how to spot a deal that isn't one.
Affordable website design, UK
Good web design for a small business doesn't need an agency budget. Here's where the money in a website really goes, what we leave out, and what we never skimp on.

The short answer
Affordable web design means a professional, phone-friendly website at a price a small business can carry, usually by cutting overheads rather than quality. Ours costs from £49 a month with no contract and no upfront fee, including hosting, SSL and changes. Judge any affordable designer by their live sites, who writes the words, and what happens after launch.

Agency prices aren't a con. A typical agency quote pays for discovery meetings, a project manager, designers and developers working from a blank page, several rounds of revisions, and the office and sales team behind all of that. For a larger company with complex needs, that process earns its keep.
For a plumber, a salon or a bookkeeper, most of it isn't needed. The pages a small business site needs are well understood: what you do, where you do it, proof you're good at it, and an easy way to get in touch. Affordable web design is about spending on those and skipping the rest.
That's why quotes for what looks like the same website can range from a few hundred pounds to several thousand. Much of the gap is process rather than the finished pages, and for a local service business the finished pages are what customers see and what brings in enquiries.
The difference in price comes from process and overheads, not from doing less on your website.
| Typical agency | MonthlySite | |
|---|---|---|
| Before any design | Sales and discovery meetings | A free preview you build yourself |
| Starting point | A blank page | A layout built for your trade |
| Who you talk to | An account manager | Charlie, who builds it |
| Upfront payment | Often a deposit | £0, first monthly payment starts it |
| Time to launch | Typically 4 to 12 weeks | 1 working day, once I've got your answers |
| Changes after launch | Care plan or per job | Included, no contract |
Cheaper shouldn't mean worse where it counts. Every site on every plan gets these.
Built and checked on phones first, because that's where many of your customers will meet you.
Light pages that load quickly on patchy mobile signal, without heavy page-builder code.
Plain descriptions of what you do and where, written from the details you send. Once it's live, change any wording you like.
Page titles, descriptions, a sitemap and a clean structure. Growth and Pro add Google Business Profile setup and local SEO.
One standard .co.uk, .uk or .com is included in your plan and registered in your name, so your business is never tied to ours.
SSL, security updates and backups, handled for you every month.
You'll deal with Charlie by email rather than a ticket queue.
Less back and forth is a big part of why the price is lower. Here's the whole process, from first look to live website.
Pick your trade and add your business name. It takes about 60 seconds and replaces the sales meeting.
Your first monthly payment starts the build. There's no deposit and no setup fee.
Services, areas, your logo and any photos you have. No photos yet is fine.
Starting from your trade's layout, I fit it to your business: the words, colours, pages and contact form.
It's live within 1 working day of your answers, on your own domain. Then you check it and send me any changes. How it works has the detail.
Send what needs updating. It's part of the monthly price.
From Charlie
A cheap build with pricey upkeep isn't affordable. Before you choose anyone, me included, add up the build, hosting, domain and changes over 3 years. Then pick whoever's cheapest over the whole 3 years.
We keep prices down by doing one thing well: websites for service businesses that want enquiries, calls and bookings. We don't build online shops, membership sites or custom web apps. If you need one of those, a specialist or a dedicated platform will serve you better, and I'll say so.
Changes are included within fair use. Starter covers 1 change a month, and Growth and Pro cover unlimited small edits, such as new prices, photos or opening hours. Bigger jobs, like a full redesign, are agreed with you first so there are no surprises on the bill.
If paying monthly doesn't suit you, one-off websites start from £549. You own the site from the start and can host it wherever you like, or add a care plan later for hosting and changes. It costs more on day one, and it can cost less over several years if you rarely need changes.
Ask to see two or three sites they've built that are live now, and open them on your phone rather than looking at screenshots. Check that the phone number is easy to tap, the pages load quickly and the contact form works.
Then ask who writes the words, what's included once the site is live, and what happens if you want to leave. An affordable designer worth using will answer all three plainly, in writing, before you pay.
Be cautious of anyone promising first place on Google, a price that only holds if you sign today, or a quote that quietly leaves out hosting and changes. Nobody can promise a ranking, and a fair price doesn't need a deadline. Our guide to how much a website costs in the UK has realistic ranges to check quotes against.

Charlie, founder
For a small business, affordable usually means a freelancer build of around £500 to £2,000, or a pay monthly website of around £30 to £100 a month with hosting included. Ours are £49, £79 or £99 a month with no contract, or a one-off website from £549.
It can be very good. The price tells you less than the work does. Look at live sites the designer has built, check them on your phone, and ask who writes the words and what happens after launch. Good affordable designers save money on overheads, not on your website.
There's no sales team, office or account manager to pay for, and each trade starts from a layout that's already been built and tested. That means my time goes into your details. Spreading the cost monthly also means there's no big bill up front.
Your domain is registered in your name and included in your plan, and your text and photos are always yours. On a monthly plan, the design and hosting are part of the service, but you can buy the site outright if you cancel and want to keep it. One-off websites from £549 are yours from the start.
Usually, yes. Starting from a layout already designed for your kind of business skips days of design work, and that is a big part of what a from-scratch quote pays for. Ours are then tailored with your name, colours, logo, words and photos. If you need something designed from a blank page, a one-off build is the better route.
Yes. We build websites for small businesses anywhere in the UK, and everything is handled by email, so there's no need to meet in person. Growth sets up local SEO for your town, and Pro adds a page for each area you cover.
Pick your trade, add your business name and see it on a laptop and a phone. If you like it, plans start at £49 a month with no contract.
