Get your business on Google
A step-by-step guide: Business Profile, verification, reviews and a website that backs it up.
Google Business Profile and local SEO
When someone nearby searches for what you do, Google shows a map and a handful of businesses. Local SEO is the work that gives you a fair shot at being one of them.

The short answer
Local SEO is the work that helps a business show up when people nearby search for what it does, especially in Google's map results. It covers your Google Business Profile, a website that clearly says what you do and where, consistent contact details across the web and a steady flow of genuine reviews. Our local SEO services are included in the Growth and Pro plans.

Search for 'gardener near me' or 'dentist in Harrogate' and Google usually shows a map with a few local businesses above the normal results. Local SEO services are about getting you into that map and into the results below it, for the towns you actually work in.
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You can read it in Google's own guidance (opens in a new tab). Relevance is how well your profile and website match the search. Distance is how far you are from the person searching, which you can't change. Prominence is how well known and well reviewed you are.
So local SEO is mostly about the two you can influence: saying clearly what you do and where, and building a genuine reputation that Google can see.
The first four come with Growth. Pro adds the last two.
Claimed or created, verified and filled in properly: categories, services, areas, hours, description and photos.
Page titles, headings and text that say what you do and which towns you cover, in the words customers actually search with.
Your name, address and number checked against the main listings, such as Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and directories for your trade.
Your Google review link, ready to text or email to customers after each job, so asking takes seconds.
A useful page for each area you cover, written for that area rather than copied with the town name swapped.
A short performance report each month, so you can see what's working and what to do next.
Many businesses already have one, sometimes created by Google or a customer. Claiming it beats making a duplicate.
Google chooses the method, often a short video or a phone or email check, sometimes a postcard. It can take a few days.
The right main category, your services, the areas you serve and accurate hours. Your real business name, with no extra keywords, which Google's guidelines don't allow.
Your work, your van, your premises. Photos of real jobs tell customers more than any description.
The profile points to your site and your site confirms the same name, number and areas, so everything agrees.
Three realistic ways to get local SEO done for a small business.
| Local SEO agency | Doing it yourself | MonthlySite Growth or Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Typically £250 to £1,000 | £0, plus your time | £79 or £99, website included |
| Website included | Usually not | You need one | Yes, up to 6 or 10 pages |
| Google Business Profile | Set up and managed | You set it up | Set up for you |
| Area pages | Often extra | You write them | One per area on Pro |
| Minimum term | Often 6 to 12 months | None | None |
Agency figures are typical UK ranges for small business local SEO, not quotes. Agencies often do more ongoing work, such as link building and content.
If you work across several towns, a page for each one can help you appear in searches there, especially where you're too far away to show in the map. But only if each page is genuinely useful. Google's spam policies treat near-identical pages with the town name swapped as doorway pages, and they can do more harm than good.
A useful area page says something specific: the jobs you've done there, how quickly you can usually get there, parking or access quirks, and reviews from customers in that area. That's how Pro area pages are written, which is also why there are a limited number of them.

What to notice
Nobody can honestly promise you the top spot on Google, and I won't. Local SEO improves your chances. Results typically build over weeks and months rather than days, and they depend on how many competitors are near you and how established they are.
The biggest lever after setup is usually in your hands: asking every customer for a review, replying to the reviews you get and keeping your hours and photos current. I set it up so that takes a couple of minutes a week, not an evening.
Local SEO isn't sold separately. It comes with Growth, alongside the website that supports it, and Pro adds area pages and a monthly report. Starter gets a Google-friendly build.

Create or claim a free Google Business Profile, verify it using the method Google offers you, then fill in every section: category, services, areas, hours and photos. A website with matching details and genuine reviews helps your profile show more often. Growth includes setting this up for you.
Ask every customer, straight after the job, with a direct link so it takes them seconds. A text message usually works better than an email. Reply to every review, good or bad. Don't offer rewards for reviews or only ask happy customers: both break Google's policies, and fake reviews are unlawful in the UK.
A newly verified Google Business Profile can start appearing within days, but building a strong position typically takes a few months. It depends on your competitors, your distance from the people searching and how quickly you gather reviews. Anyone promising page one in a week is best avoided.
Local SEO agencies typically charge £250 to £1,000 a month, sometimes more, often with a minimum term and usually without a website included. Our local SEO comes with the Growth plan at £79 a month, including the website, and Pro at £99 a month adds area pages and a monthly report.
You need a real address to verify your profile, but if you visit customers rather than having them come to you, you can hide it and show the areas you serve instead. Google doesn't allow PO boxes, and a virtual office usually won't qualify unless it's staffed during business hours.
Local SEO is part of the Growth and Pro plans because the website does a lot of the work. If you're happy with your current site, email me the address and I'll tell you honestly whether I can help, or whether you'd be better off with a specialist.
Pick your trade, add your business name and see it on a laptop and a phone. If you like it, plans start at £49 a month with no contract.
